Article 1: Dental Tips For Kids 1. Think “Clean not Green.” Teeth should be clean so there is no leftover food on them for the bacteria (bugs) that live in your mouth to eat. Bacteria cause decay by eating sugary leftovers and turning them into acid. The acid rots the teeth and makes holes (cavities). Clean teeth have no sugar leftovers on them and therefore don’t decay. Clean teeth = no cavities. 2. Brush your teeth twice a day. An adult should help at least one of those times until the child has the skills and dexterity to do the job well by him or herself. 3. Floss every day. Even baby teeth benefit from being clean, and nothing cleans between teeth as well as dental floss. 4. Sealants prevent decay. A sealant is a hard plastic that is bonded into the grooves of the biting surfaces of back permanent teeth. The teeth should be sealed as soon as possible after they come in. 5. Fluoride really does make teeth harder and less likely to decay. Use a fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride prescriptions (drops or tablets to chew daily) come in different strengths and are advantageous for most kids. Even when the water supply is fluoridated, some additional fluoride is usually still a great idea since most kids don’t drink very much tap water. School programs like “Swish and spit” are also a good thing. For kids with a higher decay rate, extra fluoride rinses should also help. 6. Orthodontia (braces) should be started early if possible. By starting early, there is less likelihood that permanent teeth will have to be removed. Early ortho also usually results in being done with the braces at an earlier age. Let your regular dentist take x-rays to check for missing permanent teeth (preferably by age 6). If baby teeth must be removed early due to decay, make sure to have a space maintainer put in to help keep the teeth from drifting. 7. Never put a baby to bed with a bottle of any liquid other than water. Milk and juices have acids and sugar in them, and they can quickly rot a baby’s teeth if they are in contact with these liquids all night long. Water is safe. 8. Teeth are not tools; they are for eating. Don’t use them as package openers, wire strippers, nut-crackers, or pliers. Protect them. Wear a mouth guard if playing sports. Do not do piercings in the mouth – they can permanently chip, break, and ruin teeth. 9. Get regular professional cleanings from a hygienist or dentist (usually at least once every six months). 10. See the dentist. The first trip should be as early as age 1. Most dentists prefer to wait until age 2 or 3 unless there are any problems or possible problems. Plan on a check-up about twice a year for most kids. These routine checkups give your dentist the best chance to diagnose any problems early, and make specific recommendations for each child. Remember -- prevention and early treatment are the best medicine. Article 2: Growing Up Cavity Free In many countries, tooth decay (and gum disease) is the second most common disease, with only the cold more common. Studies have linked poor oral health in children to poor performance in school, poor social relationships and less success in later life. But whether you're six or sixty, with today's technology and advances in dental medicine, it's easier than ever before to prevent cavities and gum disease. To help your kids grow up cavity free, here are a few tips... Don't make the mistake of thinking baby teeth don't need as much care as permanent ones. Even though they're eventually lost, they do an important job of holding a place in your child's mouth for the permanent teeth. Until they're old enough for an infant-sized toothbrush, clean your baby's teeth with a dampened piece of gauze or washcloth. Once your child is old enough, help her/him to use a child-sized toothbrush. (Use only a 'pea' sized dot of fluoride toothpaste and don't allow your child to swallow it.) Around age six your child should be coordinated enough to brush her/his own teeth with an appropriate sized, soft-bristled toothbrush. Brush at least twice a day, supervising while your child is young. Replace toothbrushes every three months and never allow sharing. If your child has been ill, replace their toothbrush as soon as they're feeling better. Check to make sure that your child is brushing properly. Don't let them brush too fast or hard or miss areas. Your child's teeth should be flossed at least once a day. By age nine, most children will have the skill to floss on their own. Eat nutritious foods and drink healthy beverages. Limit snacks, especially sugary or sticky sweets that cling to teeth. The best time to eat sweet foods is with a meal or at the end of a meal, when natural salivation will wash most of them away. By age one, have your child checked by a dentist. There are many books that can help you make your child's first dental visit a treat instead of a scare. Your child should have an orthodontic check-up by age seven. Many potential problems can be more easily and economically fixed during growing years. Once permanent teeth have come in, talk to your dentist about dental sealants and fluoride treatments. Get regular dental check-ups and cleanings. Gums should not bleed after flossing or brushing. (This can be a sign of poor oral hygiene or nutritional deficiency.) Eat a balanced diet and limit between meal snacks. If your child has trouble using dental floss, try an interdental cleaner. Your dentist can recommend one and instruct your child on proper use. Make sure your child uses a professional mouth guard for sports and play. While it won't prevent cavities, a guard can keep your child's teeth from being damaged. (Almost one third of all dental injuries happen in sports accidents.) Perhaps most important of all...set an excellent example. Let your child see you taking excellent care of your teeth. Show your child how to have a healthy smile for life. Article 3: Snacking and Cavities Tooth decay is one of the most common of all disorders, especially for children, young adults and seniors, and is the most common cause of tooth loss in younger people. Tooth decay happens when the bacteria that is normally present in your mouth converts the food you eat into acid. The bacteria and acids combine with leftover food and saliva and form a sticky substance called plaque, which adheres to your teeth. Plaque begins to accumulate on your teeth in as little as 20 minutes after you've eaten. If it's not removed, the acid in the plaque will dissolve your tooth enamel and create a hole, called a cavity, which if left untreated, will cause damage to the tooth. Snacking habits can play an important role in whether or not you or your child are prone to cavities and tooth loss. However, all snacks are not necessarily bad. The two main factors that make a food a bad snack is the amount of sugar in the food and the length of time the food stays in your mouth. The bacteria in your mouth feeds especially sugars and starches, and acid will begin to form from even a healthy food if it stays in your mouth long. In general, a healthy snack is low in sugar and has high nutritional value. Examples of healthy snacks include vegetables, fruits, fruit juice, cheese, yogurt, milk, nuts, seeds or whole-wheat bread or cereals. Unhealthy snacks, such as ice cream, cake, cookies, chocolate, chocolate milk, candy or soft drinks, have little nutritional value and are high in sugar content. There are also some foods that are nutritional, but bad for your teeth, because they stick to your teeth. Examples are raisins, dried fruit, granola bars and chocolate milk. These foods are better eaten as part of a meal, when other foods and liquids may clean them off your teeth. A balance of good carbohydrates and protein from snacks will give you or your child strength and energy to get through the day and help balance blood sugar levels between meals. If you haven't eaten for about four hours, your body will be physically hungry, so an energizing snack will make you feel better and perhaps keep you from overeating at your next meal. Even "bad" snacks can be eaten occasionnally. If you or your child just has to have that piece of cake or a pack of gummy bears, then only do so when you can brush your teeth right afterwards. Whether you snack or not, excellent oral hygiene, brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily, is necessary to prevent cavities. You should also see your dentist twice a year for check-ups and professional cleanings that remove the plaque and tartar you miss. For your dental health and your overall health, it's best to limit snacks to healthy, nutritional foods and to only snack when your body needs the fuel, not because a snack is available. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

As part of our ongoing community involvement, Dr. Marcus and staff volunteered at the Millbrae Art & Wine Festival. We worked the Beer Booth located on the corner of Broadway & La Cruz Avenue, we had so much fun! Don't ever let Dr. Marcus change your keg, beer will get everywhere!!! We saw lots of familiar faces and took a few pictures ~ check them out on our Facebook Page!

We attended and sponsored the Millbrae AYSO Opening Day festivities. We handed out lots of water bottles and saw many familiar smiles! Have a great season kids!

Dr. Marcus is currently sponsoring two teams in the San Bruno AYSO (U8 Division), the Pink Panda's & the San Bruno Strikers. Go Teams!

CONTINUING EDUCATION

In May, Dr. Marcus attended the 18th Annual Meeting of the Roth Williams International Society of Orthodontist in Chicago. All attendees have taken the two-year course of Doctors Roth & Williams that teaches the philosophy of Functional Occlusion. There were 20 presenters over a 3 day period. Some of the topics covered advance studies in Joint Positions, Splint Adjustments, Surgical Cases and Sleep Apnea.

Our staff was also recently retrained in CPR procedures though the American Heart Association with the San Mateo Dental Society.

Some Tips on How to Pay for Braces

Do you have a desire to get braces so you can have straight teeth? Perhaps you had braces as a child and are preparing for the time when your children may need them? With the popularity of braces on the rise, they are becoming more and more expensive. If you have a desire to get braces, but are unsure of how to pay for them, here are few tips!

1) Use your Dental Insurance. It'll help you save money. Braces can cost anywhere from $3,000 and up.

2) Pay with Cash. The ideal way to pay for braces is to pay the bills as they come. At Marcus Orthodontics we also offer OrthoBanc, an automated monthly drafting service.

3) Set up a flexible spending account. Ask your employer if they provide the option for you to have a flexible spending account. It allows you to take money out of your paychecks (tax-free) and set the funds aside in an account to be used for medical/dental bills.

4) Set up an installment plan with the orthodontist. Most orthodontists will want a sizable payment up front and then will allow you to make monthly payments. At Marcus Orthodontics we offer 3 options for your initial payment: 0%, 10% or 50% down.

Tips to Help Control Bad Breath

Bad breath happens to everyone. Here are a few tips to help control it in your family.

1) SWISH & RINSE - If you can't brush after a meal, head to the bathroom & rinse your mouth with water to flush out the leftover food particles.

2) BREATHE THROUGH YOUR NOSE - Mouth breathing reduces saliva and dries out your tongue. Breathing through your nose allows more moisture in your mouth. Easting apples and carrots can also help keep your mouth moist, as they promote saliva production.

3) BRUSH YOUR TONGUE - Bacteria that live on the back of your tongue can release smelly, volatile compounds. In order to remove them, both you & your children should gently scrub your tongues once a day with a soft, wet toothbrush.

4) CONSULT YOUR DENTIST OR YOUR DOCTOR - If the brushing does not help, see what your dentist can recommend you do. If it's a medical issue the call you doctor to help locate the issue. For example, allergies and sinus infections can cause bad breath.

April is National Facial Protection Month

Nearly 60,000 people injure their faces annually while playing baseball and more than 100,000 people suffer facial injuries from bicycle accidents. This month enhances public awareness of facial protection and specialized treatment for facial injuries, at least half of which are in children. Pediatric dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons and orthodontists—which are all ADA- recognized dental specialists—are sponsoring "April is National Facial Protection Month."

Their message is clear: Avoid sports injuries by wearing protective equipment!!!!

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) and the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) encourage active people—children, parents, weekend warriors, professional athletes—to play it safe when getting outside this spring (or playing indoor sports). According to the National Institute of Health, childhood sports injuries may be inevitable but prevention does matter. For instance, football players can protect their faces with mouth guards and helmets. Likewise, basketball players should wear mouth guards and eye protection. A study published in the February 2003 Journal of the American Medical Association showed that players who used faceguards—devices made of plastic or metal that attached to baseball helmets—were 35 percent less likely to suffer facial injuries than non-users. Further, the Centers for Disease Control estimates that universal helmet use could save one life each day and prevent one head injury every four minutes. The Marshfield (Wisconsin) Clinic states that wearing protective eyewear can prevent 90 percent of eye injuries in the U.S. It seems the first step to facial protection is just putting on the gear. From skateboarding to rollerblading, baseball to volleyball, karate to gymnastics, downhill skiing to bicycling, all sports are contact sports. From mouth guards, to face shields, to eye shields, dental specialists advocate wearing protective gear to save face. Top 10 Ways to Save Face

Wear a mouth guard for any contact sport (soccer, yes; chess, probably not). Mouth guards can help prevent jaw, mouth and teeth injuries and are less costly than recovering from the injury.
Wear a helmet and it will protect your head by absorbing the energy of an impact. You don't have to lose your head because you take a spill when cycling, snowboarding, rollerblading or horseback riding.
Wear protective eyewear so your mom won't have to say, "You'll poke your eye out." More importantly, you'll be able to keep your eye on the tennis ball, baseball, football, etc.
Wear a face shield to keep your skin free from scratches and bruises. Hockey pucks, basketballs, and racquetballs can do severe damage.
Be aware of family pets. Each year roughly 44,000 people incur facial injuries from dog bites. Children should be supervised when playing with family pets (cats and rabbits too).
Buckle up and use appropriate child safety seats. Passengers who don't buckle up are more likely to have a brain injury in a crash than the buckled driver.
Keep babies and toddlers safe. They crawl and climb, so pad sharp corners of tables, use safety locks on cabinets, install stairwell safety gates, and secure windows. They also teethe, so hide the sharp pencils.
Be alert. Alert spectators can avoid foul baseballs and flying hockey pucks. Watch your step when climbing up bleachers.
Use common sense. If an activity carries risk of dental or facial injury, wear the right protective gear. Without it, even a pickup basketball game could result in a trip to the emergency room.

BABIES
The problem: Ninety-seven percent of parents don't know that their babies should see a dentist by age 1, reports the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. As a result, many babies are at risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease.

The solution: Your little one should see a dentist within six months of getting her first tooth or by her first birthday. "The dentist will examine the gums and teeth, and will also show parents the proper oral care techniques for their baby," says Cindy Flanagan, doctor of dental surgery and a spokesperson for the Academy of General Dentistry. If your child already has a few teeth and hasn't yet seen a dentist, make an appointment. Also, be sure to keep up on her biannual checkups.

Natural booster: Toothpaste isn't recommended for babies under age 2 (they can't spit yet), so clean your baby's mouth--even before teeth arrive--by wiping her gums with a damp cloth after she eats.

LITTLE KIDS
The problem: The combination of fluoridated water, fluoridated toothpaste, and fluoridated mouthwash can expose children to (surprise!) too-high levels of fluoride. In fact, 40 percent of U.S. kids develop some form of dental fluorosis, a condition marked by permanent white or brown streaks on the teeth, says a University of Iowa College of Dentistry study.

The solution: Find out the fluoride level in your water from your dentist or local water supplier, says Flanagan. If it exceeds the American Dental Association's recommended ratio of two parts per million, consider using purified or distilled water. The risk of fluorosis occurs while your child's teeth are forming, so avoid toothpaste at least until his permanent teeth start coming in.

BIG KIDS
The problem: The number of children with primary (baby) tooth decay is rising, according to the National Institute of Health, due to kids eating and drinking more sugary foods and beverages than ever. And it's not just the primary teeth at risk--decay can travel down to the permanent teeth waiting beneath the gums.

The solution: "One of the most important habits your child can develop is regularly brushing and flossing," says Fred Pockrass, an integrative dentist, cofounder of the Eco-Dentistry Association, and owner of Transcendentist, the first green dental office in the U.S. Make flossing part of your child's regular routine. Instead of doing it at bedtime--when she's tired and likely to skimp on the job--have her brush and floss her teeth right after dinner.

PRETEENS
The problem: Having a mouthful of metal isn't just an aesthetic annoyance for kids--sharp brackets on braces often cut the insides of their cheeks, too. Everyday bacteria in the mouth can get into those little cuts, resulting in canker sores.

The solution: Check the ingredients in your kid's toothpaste. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), the foaming agent in most conventional kinds, can wear down mouth tissue and make it more easily abraded.

Natural booster: Provide your braces-wearer with a natural SLS-free toothpaste to keep her mouth more resistant to cuts from the braces. If she does get a canker sore, treat it with Canker Cover, a natural, dissolvable gel patch that goes over the sore, ($10 for a box of six, cankercover.com)

Treat Yourself Right This Halloween

October is National Orthodontic Health Month!!!

Many treats can cause havoc for trick-or-treaters with braces. These treats can potentially cause damage that may prolong treatment. This is why the AAO is providing tips for trick-or-treaters undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Learn about which treats are friendlier to braces and which ones should be avoided. A few sweets can be okay occasionally, provided that the orthodontic patient remembers to brush and floss after eating.

Below are guidelines for orthodontic patients so that they can enjoy the holiday and still be on pace to achieve their healthy, beautiful smiles.

ORTHODONTIC-FRIENDLY TREATS
In general, orthodontic patients should look for foods that are soft and easy to chew.

- Soft, melt-in-your-mouth chocolates

- Peanut butter cups

- Milk shakes

- Gelatin

- Peeled, thinly sliced apples

- Ice cream

TREATS TO AVOID!!!!
In general, orthodontic patients should avoid treats that are sticky, hard, chewy or crunchy.

- Caramel

- Nuts (including candies that contain nuts)

- Licorice, jelly beans or taffy

- Hard pretzels

- Bubblegum

- Candy Corn

- Lollipops

- Popcorn (including unpopped kernels)

- Taco chips

- Ice

The AAO encourages orthodontic patients to consult with their orthodontist if they have specific questions or concerns pertaining to the types of foods that they should avoid.

The Right Time For An Orthodontic Check-Up

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends all children get a check-up with an orthodontist no later than age 7 because, while your child's teeth may appear to be straight, there may actually be a problem that needs to be evaluated by an orthodontist.

SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT IF YOU RECOGNIZE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING PROBLEMS IN YOUR GROWING CHILD:

- Early or late loss of baby teeth
- Difficulty in chewing or biting

The article goes on to say: "So much for flex appeal. It's your choppers the ladies are checking out, according to a recent University of North Carolina study. Males with perfectly aligned pearly whites are associated with qualities such as dominance, strength, and social competence."

Even Bright mature Teenagers-- sometimes do things that are "stupid"

But when that happens, it's not really their fault. It's because their brain hasn't finished developing. The underdeveloped area is called the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex. Research now shows that it plays a critical role in decision making, problem solving and understanding future consequences of today's actions. Problem is, it won't be fully mature until they're into their 20's. This explains why our children (and patients) don't always do what we, as adults, (and orthodontists) think is perfectly logical and "common sense". As a result of learning this I can work with my teenage patients in a manner that incorporates this into my requests for ... excellent toothbrushing, minimal soda intake and consistent rubber band wear. This is a special day on October 27, 2009 in which we discount Invisalign treatment.

Dr. Marcus will be attending the Invisalign Western Orthodontic Forum on October 16 - 17, 2009 in Orange County, California so he will be up to date on all the latest Invisalign techniques and improvements.
